Summer's just around the corner, and with it come high temperatures and good times. You might be planning a family vacation, a beach day, or a barbecue – the sky's the limit. Any change in weather can affect your car's performance, and there's nothing worse than being stranded on summer vacation. Follow these five guidelines to prepare your car for safe summer fun.
Check Your Oil (and Everything Else!)
Preparing for a trip is a great reason to get your oil changed, especially if it's been a bit longer than the recommended 3,000 miles or 6 months. While you're there, though, consider getting your other fluids, such as transmission and power steering, checked – but especially your coolant, to prevent overheating. All of these are affected by seasonal temperature changes and should be monitored periodically.
Check your Tires (and Alignment!)
Sudden changes in temperature drastically alter the air pressure in tires. In hot weather, the pressure can rise – and might reveal wear or damage to your tires that you hadn't noticed in cooler months. While you can absolutely check your tire pressure at home, consider getting your wheel alignment adjusted by professionals at the same time to avoid extra trouble on the road.
Check your AC (and Belts!)
This tip is obvious – before the weather gets warm, make sure your air conditioning can keep you cool. Have your timing and serpentine belts checked while you're having your AC looked at to avoid any nasty surprises.
Check your Battery
High heat reduces battery life, and there's nothing worse than having an automotive battery suddenly run out of juice. Fortunately, battery testing is quick and easy – a little foresight can go a long way in keeping you from stalling out on the beach.
Check your Glove Compartment
Of course, no amount of preparedness can prevent every conceivable mishap. Once your car is checked out and ready to go, take a moment to make sure you are as well! Snacks, water, jumper cables, and sunscreen are all great things to keep available in your glove compartment when traveling in the heat. Mix and match to suit your needs – and if you need help getting your vehicle ready for the summer months ahead, we invite you to bring your vehicle to Kwik Kar Auto Repair today!
